I tried Microneedling and this is what happened....
Day After the Procedure (Redness)
A few months ago, I tried a procedure called Microneedling. I visited the Advanced Plastic Surgery Institute and made an appointment with Emily Frost for the procedure. What is Microneedling?
"Many skin rejuvenation treatments use the skin's natural healing process to create a smoother, toned, and refreshed appearance. What sets MicroPen microneedling apart from laser skin resurfacing and manual dermal needling rollers is the enhanced comfort, reduced downtime, and precision involved with the procedure.
The MicroPen is fully adjustable, which enables Dr. Olson to customize each treatment. Depending on the condition being treated, the 12 tiny micro-needles in the tip of the handheld device create small injuries at a uniform depth.
The treatment promotes the growth of collagen and elastin — the building blocks for smooth, toned skin — and also makes the skin more readily able to absorb topical gels, creams, and serums. That enhances the effects in the skin's deeper layers."
Emily Frost was my aesthetician for the procedure. She was very thorough in explaining what Microneedling was and what type of results I would see.
A topical anesthetic is applied to the treatment area to enhance your comfort before the actual Microneedling treatment begins. When the anesthetic has taken effect (after about 20 minutes), our aesthetic specialist presses the MicroPen gently against the skin and, in a single motion, glides the device back and forth over the skin to cover the entire treatment area.
The procedure typically takes between 15 and 30 minutes, and most patients experience little to no discomfort."
After the topical anesthetic took affect, she started with the procedure. She started with a higher setting and made three passes across my forehead. As soon as the needle pen hit my forehead, it was a sharp pain. It definitely felt like needles piercing my skin. I'll be honest it was extremely uncomfortable and I had to brace myself. The last two passes were a lower setting and a little more bearable.
She then went on to my cheeks. The pain was definitely a level down and not as horrible. The most uncomfortable part about the cheek area was hearing the pen right next to my ear. It felt like nails on a chalkboard.
Last area she went over was my nose which I would have to say was equally as painful as the forehead.
Overall, the 20 min procedure was definitely uncomfortable and I kept trying to tell myself "beauty is pain" over and over again in my head. Before the procedure I thought my threshold for pain was high but this was definitely worst than my body tattoos.
The Results
I have definitely seen some changes in my skin. I especially see a reduction in my fine lines on my forehead. It's been bothering me for the last few years and it doesn't matter what products I use it seemed like it just kept getting deeper. Another difference I've seen is my skin is literally glowing. I definitely see a brightness and the dullness is gone. I used to look at my skin in the morning and basically cringe. Women do you feel me?? Emily noted that you can see results in up to 6 weeks. I started seeing my fine lines decrease in almost three weeks. I am quite happy with the results.
Overall, I believe that I will be repeating this procedure (recommended every 6 months) in the future. I'm not too thrilled about the pain again but "beauty is pain" right?!!!
Would you try Microneedling? Why or why not?
